There's an interview with one of the core developers, Michael Meeks, on LWN
which gives a bit more detail:

It seems that go-oo was distributed as a series of patches against the
mainline OOo code, whereas LibreOffice is developed as a fully separate
codebase (integrating most of the go-oo patches).
