Google trends thinks the peak year for Ubuntu was 2009.

Ubuntu has lost the "latest trendy new thing" shine that it once had,
and I think problems began with CloseButtonGate in which it became
clear that the opinions of the user base were being sidelined. It's
important to have users, and distros ignore them at their peril.
