Before I started using actual LaTeX I would do it on Wikipedia. If
you create an account, then at the top of the page you should see a
link to "My Sandbox". This lets you draft pages that are only
accessible to you. If you write the equation here in the correct
markup and press "Preview", then Wikipedia will format it and print it
as a picture on the preview page. You can save this and upload it to
your website.
Briefly, the sort of formatting you are looking at is:

<math> \text{cutting velocity} = \frac{\text{cutting speed} \times \pi
\times \text{diameter of rod}}{12} </math>
[/code]
If you cut and paste the text between [code][/code] into your sandbox
and press "Preview", you should see what I mean :)

As if to prove my point, I just had a look at my sandbox. There are
13 equations which I haven't touched since the first year of uni!
