[Sheflug] free (as in freedom) ebook readers?

Does anyone have any recommendations for e-book readers that are
as un-evil as possible?

i.e

* that can display out-of-copyright books in standard formats;
* where it is possible to buy, download and read in-copyright books,
  but doesn't lock you into a particular vendor for buying books,
* and is DRM-free;
* that can be backed up to a PC or whatever;
* and doesn't require that the PC run Windows;
* that can't be remotely administered by the Amazons of this world;
* doesn't stop working the moment a vendor switches off their admin
  server;
* doesn't involve the clubbing of baby seals,
* etc.

?
