I do not dislike PDF, it was their pdf forms callback that I hated.
There are alternatives such as openXML or even epub, djVu or even html or
XPS.
The issue is the alternatives all have their own set of issues. Epub has a
problem around printing. Pdf prints just about everywhere on everything.
DjVu has superior compression, but I think it is proprietary.
Similarly, the new XPS format from Microsoft has some advantages and mupdf
and Okular both support it.
The problem like everything else is PDF currently has the marketplace and
there are enough tools to make it very usable under Linux. It is supported
on all OSes
For most formats, there are millions of new tools where someone has a
bright idea and is hoping it will catch on. I normally wait until there are
recovery methods (Probably why I do not trust password managers). For PDFs
you can always repair most corruptions with the poppler-utils package. At
least enough to get the relevant info out again.
