[Sheflug] RedHat
Hi
Some of us might have noticed that RedHat who are owned by IBM have
closed sourced their previously open source code. This is a bit like
the SuSE thing of the late 1990's and early 2000's. From Miguel de
Icaza on Twitter...
https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats-commitment-open-source-response-gitcentosorg-changes
" What Steve Ballmer’s Microsoft couldn’t do against the GPL, Red Hat
did: they found a loophole they can use to make their Linux proprietary.
Enshittification has finally come to Linux. To IBM’s Red Hat,
non-customers are leeches "
Meanwhile SuSE have issued this public statement...
https://www.suse.com/c/navigating-changes-in-the-open-source-landscape/
" SUSE has an impressive legacy deeply rooted in the world of
#opensource. As we witness #RedHat restricting public access to the
source code of #RHEL, a disheartening move for our thriving open-source
community, it's uplifting to see #SUSE standing firm in its dedication
to the vibrant #openSUSE ecosystem. "
There are of course many other versions of GNU/Linux out there which are
not involved in this present rift in the open source and free software
community. For my part I dumped RedSplat software a long time ago.
Something that is not always possible if you are running a large-scale
commercial organisation. Probably a god idea to keep an eye on this and
see how it develops.
