What exactly are you after? Do you want to write a stand-alone email client
or a library/plugin for mail enabling apps?

You might like to have a root around on http://www.gnome.org They're
probably working on just such an API, maybe something akin to M$'s MAPI. I
used MAPI a few years ago and it was dead easy. That was before COM, so
it's probably much easier now. I mention Gnome because I think they're
going to try and provide something very similar to COM's functionality.

Thanks for the usenetserver.com thing. While we're on the subject of
news... no, perhaps another thread.
