For posting messages there is no need to invoke sendmail (the news protocol has
stuff for posting so it's not a mail thing). They get posted to localhost and
then leafnode takes care of posting them. But sendmail could get involved if you
want to reply individually to someone. But I can see no reason why this is
obligatory. You should just be able to carry on using smtp as now.

I wrote some simple-mided notes about sendmail/fetchmail on my site at
http://www.noether.freeserve.co.uk which might help if you want to suss out how
they work. leafnode is reasonably easy to configure.
