Firstly, I think you've done it the right way round. Purely because
Linux is infinitely more intelligent than any brand of windows.
While Linux may setup various drive geometeries etc. that windows
struggles with (or rather, doesn't even try with!!!), anything windows
does, Linux can work around.
If you have a disk partitioner ie Partition Magc etc. then great if not
read the FIPS docs. which should be on your distribution CD somewhere in
DOSAPPS. Don't sweat too much, although they advise you to back up your
whole system, you only really need to back up the stuff that really
counts (the stuff that would go into your home directory in Linux! The
rest can always be re-installed/reconfigured easily.
Then try and get a look at Running Linux by O'Reilly and associates to
get some idea about how many (and how big) your Linux partitions should
be...
If you just want to be able to have 24hr access to the kind of operating
system that will enable you to finish your thesis, then one big
partition will probably do for now(Of course with an additional swap
partition!).
I'm assuming you'll be using such software as Latex etc. I've no idea
what your thesis is about but if you've written any kind of computer
programs to help reduce your data, I've got a great program that takes
the code and turns it into a nice, easy to include latex file, called
lgrind. If you get your system sorted, I'll email you the tar-ball if
you like!!!
Hope all goes well and once you get what you need installed you have
more time to get a proper linux system set-up.
Feel free to give any of us a shout if need be, that's what we're here
for!!!!
