Slow WWW in now a bit faster WWW

Hi all,
Thanks for the help on getting my PPP up and running faster. especially
Martin for suggesting some useful ideas. In the end it was, as usual, my
own stupidity that bought my downfall. I have an old Hayes Optima 288
modem and I seem to recall, way back when I had some manuals, that the
fastest IO speed was of the order of 33K so I changed my serial speed
from 115K or whatever silly figure it was, and behold, what bitter sweet
success was this. So going slower is going faster after all!!! I guess
that there was a lot of retries going on to get data down over the link,
and this was slowing everthing down.
