upgrading files.......

i'm new to this Linux caper and i'm having a bit of
trouble upgrading some of the utilities prior to compiling a new kernel. can
someone please help?

i'm using rh5.2 (2.0.36) and upgrading to
2.2.2

i've updated all the necessary files except Util-linux and
Net-tools

i have v2.8. i am told i need v2.9. i have gone through
the process of ./configure / make / make install with no errors but the version
number displayed is still 2.8 (when using chsh -v command)

i have v1.46. i am told i need v1.49. i have configured
the files using make config but when issuing the make command it errors
out.
the most relevant part of this message seems to be
referring to a file or directory that is missing - 'linux/pkt_sched.h' . where
do i get this file?
