If you're using RH, the easiest way is just to find an RPM file of the
stuff you need - making sure it's for the same type of computer. Then you
rpm -U <file> and it's in.

RPM is very powerful, and it's worth reading the man page for it. It will
install packages, upgrade packages, all that stuff. You can also persuade
it to upgrade via ftp; so if you're using a connected PC you can basically
ask it to upgrade your system direct from ftp://ftp.redhat.com.

RPM takes care of all the source code compilation and stuff like that;
generally you get precompiled binaries. It'll make sure everything you
need is up-to-date: you should have no problems with any software you
install via RPM. Although it is a shell command, there are also Gui
interfaces to it, KDE GNOME both have very good ones, and there are some
generic ones available too.
