The trickiest thing is the way devices can be moved around yet still want
to be the same device. e.g. a mouse may move from number one to number two
on the bus, but you still want it to be your mouse, but in /dev/ it would
move from one device to another. It's very flexible like that, maybe too
flexible. (Plug in ten mice and three keyboards, how do you pick the ones
to use?)
