Missing module

I have just upgraded my SUSE 6.1 to kernel 2.2.13 (via kernel tree 2.2.11
patches 2.2.12 2.2.13). I have recompiled using the minimum number of
options I think I need, and using the minimum of modules. The problem I have
is on boot the two serial ports are detected properly and then I get about
15 messages about 'modprobe can't locate module char-major-4' or similar,
the message is about char-major-4 and modprobe but these may not be the
exact words, it goes past to quickly!

Any ideas what char-major-4 for is a module for? I never had these problems
in kernel 2.2.7 and the only thing to have changed is the kernel and the
System.map

Cheers

Alastair
