I'm confused, why is Mandrake making you install StarOffice using the
distributions default dependancy-based package system?

For large multidistribution applications like MythII/Civilization:Call to
Power/StarOffice you install by executing a supplied executable setup script.
A script designed to deal with varying libc issues and sometimes even
different binary architectures. If I use my own distributions normal
packaging tool (tar; as it's Slackware) against SO5.1 I get this error:

tar: Hmm, this doesn't look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next file header
tar: Only read 5295 bytes from archive setup.log
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I could imagion some confusion if I didn't know to simply run the script :)
