RE: Linux Answers
Since I'm probably the least experienced Linux user here, you really ought
to suffer a diary of last night's Linux Answers/RH6.0 upgrade.
Er, it worked :-)
A couple of sillies. Diald has stopped working, but I think that's because
I'm still using /dev/cua0 /dev/cua1 /dev/cua2 /dev/cua3 serial ports which the new kernel nolonger
supports (?). KDE installation seemed OK, but I can't find Kppp (not a
problem when I get diald working) or Kmail (I usually use Netscrape anyway).
Sam mentioned dodgy instructions in the mag - they referred me to an LASTART
script which was supposed to setup KDE as default d/top - couldn't find the
script anywhere. This is probably a good thing, since adding startkde to
.xinitrc is probably easier by hand than script.
KDE? I like it, it feels much more stable and has lots more functionality
than Gnome, but the default theme sucks donkeys. I miss Enlightenment, but
newer versions of KDE and E purport to work together.
Things I expected to go wrong that didn't: XF86Config was completely
unscathed!
Things that work that didn't before: Gnumeric spreadsheet runs (suspect the
correct support RPMS have now been installed).
On balance: I still love Linux, it just gets better.
The magazine? Take Paul's advice. Buy it and use the reply card to make
suggestions. It may not be perfect, but it's a *start*.
