Ahh, more of an interesting problem. . . to be honest, if you can get X
going and everything, X is probably configured okay - it's either the
software on top (i.e. GNOME), or that below which is doing the damage.

As well as the virtual terminal keys, try Ctrl-Alt-Backspace: this should
kill the X-server. Basically, your problem now amounts to finding out what
has hung. If you can get to a virtual terminal, or you can kill the
X-server successfully, you'll probably have a software configuration
issue, possibly a power management thing. If you can't get to a virtual
terminal, and you can't kill the X-server, you probably have something a
little more serious wrong.

It kind of sounds like you have a power management problem: power
management should be completely turned off in the bios; Linux should
handle it for you.

Try the key combinations to see if you can get a terminal or kill the
x-server; that should tell you a lot more about where the problem lies.
