Hmmmm ... . I never actually heard of this happening before. What happens
when you ping a server? How much loss is it reporting?
To be honest, I wouldn't suspect linux particularly. . . ppp is ppp is
ppp, most of the time. What hardware have you got, particularly the modem?
It could be that linux isn't initializing the modem correctly. . if you've
two PCs, connect the serial ports together, try dialing the internet via
Windows and see what Hayes commands it chucks out.
It may also be worth trying opening up your modem's inf file in windows. I
would guess notepad could read it? That ought to have some initialisation
stuff in it .. compare contrast the strings with those that linux is set
up to use: it'll start AT and then a lot of gibberish.
Only other thing to try is a different dial program. Are you using ppp
straight (i.e., UP'ing ppp0 directly ?! ;), or conjunction with kppp, or
gppp or whatever the gnome equivilent is? Frankly, your problem sounds
like a hardware problem, but since Windows works the difference must be a
configuration issue..
Hope that helps, anyway!
Cheers,
Alex.
