SuSE installation

Hello all.

When I saw Rudiger install SuSE6.3 during the demo week, it looked so easy
and I was very impressed. So I spent real money and bought it. What fun and
games I'm having trying to get it working! In the last three days of trying,
I have installed it by the Automatic mode five times, and by the Guided mode
three times, closely following the manual's instructions.

Firstly, although I set up the keyboard to be in English at the start of the
installation and it tested out OK, by the time the installation was
finished, it had become a qwertz, German keyboard. It took me ages to find
out how to correct this with SAX.

Secondly, the screen resolution is always configured to 640x480, which is
poor on my 17 monitor. Can't find any way of increasing this to the 800x600
I use in Windows, SAX doesn't want to know.

Thirdly, after installing and closing down the computer, when I re-boot, I
get an error message saying Not found any [active partition] in HDD. It
then goes on to tell me to use a system floppy disk to boot it.

I have fitted my computer with a caddy, and Windows and Linux are on
separate hard drives, so Linux is installed on its own.

I have just sent an S.O.S e-mail to the SuSE help line to see what they have
to say.

The point of all this rigmarole is to ask if any one else in the group is
having any difficulties with the new SuSE. I would be very interested to
know.

As an aside, I installed Red Hat from the cover CD of Linux Answers, and had
no problems with keyboard, screen resolution or booting. Took it off after I
found it worked, to get back to SuSE.

All the very best to you all.
