Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think that is what it was.
I have cured the problem by downloading a new kernel source from Mandrake site
And I can now compile a kernel with no problems.
The standard files that came with this install were version 2.2.13-4mdk. I
installed 2.2.13-5mdk and it now works fine.
What baffles me is, why a recompile with a completely fresh out of the box
install won't work. Still not too serious, it now works.
