gcc

Hi.

I have just written me first program in C but I am having problems
compiling it.
I am in the same directory as my proggie but when I invoke gcc with:

gcc hello.c

nothing happens.
I am new to both linux and programming so please be gentle with me.

One more thing. I have managed to install Suse 6.2 and have even managed to
connect to the internet and get sound, now the little so and so's have
realeased 6.3. What files do I need to upgrade or do I need to buy some new
system discs?
