RE: Another silly question...
You pay your ISP to provide
(1) bandwidth - a permenantly open connection to the backbone of the
internet
(2) DNS servers so you can find stuff by name
(3) an IP address so you can actually connect
(4) mail servers
(5) free storage
If you want to host a web page, then you need a permenantly open net
connection, for which you need as a minimum a 64k leased line, a fixed IP
address allocated by the 'Net gods, a router to connect your machines to
the net, preferably a DNS server so your lookups are all local so faster,
and a web/ftp server. A mail server is also a requirement unless you want a
real dumb site. The fact that you can get all this for the shavings off a
1p/min phone call in the light of this is nothing short of an economic
miracle.
Yes, you could have a fixed IP address but since the 'net is broadband
fibre WAN you will get nowhere since you can't directly connect a modem to
the net without tranceivers. The bit of the net that turns up on your PC is
the very last link in a very long chain.
Note - IP address (IPV4) are rapidly running out. ISPs are allocated a
block which they lease to you by DHCP when you connect.

Ummm... this may seem like a silly question, but WHY do you
need an ISP? Why can't you use your modem to connect straight
to the internet. The ISPs manage it so why can't the normal user?
This was not one of my questions this is a freind who would think
up of something like that, and I have to admit, I don't actually
_know_ the real answer to the question.
Solutions would be welcome...
Thanks
