The BIOS looks at the drive too see if it can see anything it recognises -
ie, old-style partition tables. If it can't, it won't load anything. Linux
can't do squat about that - it's not loaded yet, remember.
They're not 'DOS' partitions per se, they're just a hang-over from the DOS
era.
