Cheers everyone, especially Stephen T,
I`ve finally managed to get the two directories I wanted mounted on my
flatmates box.
However, his machine is not returning the favour, although I`ve yet to
sit down and check it all out.
I`m not using Linuxconf. I thought I`d learn how to hack all the config
files by hand, then I can try and figure out what is going on with my
system.
It appears that the problem is with the /etc/hosts.deny file (basically
ALL: ALL and nothing else) is refusing all connections, although
/etc/hosts.allow contains the name of both my machine and my flatmates
machine:
ALL: arrakis.localdomain
ALL: marlboro.localdomain
Shouldn`t this mean that connections are accepted from arrakis or
marlboro on both machines? Obviously not.
I`ve changed /etc/hosts.deny to:
ALL: PARANOID.
Is this a good thing?
I`ve changed my flatmates box`s files to be the same (changing
IPs/names around of course) mine and it seems that telnet from arrakis
(192.168.0.1 - my machine) to marlboro (192.168.0.2 - flatmate`s box)
doesn`t appear to connect properly, ftp from arrakis to marlboro has
been funny for a few days, but is fine in the other direction!
Should I think about setting up a firewall (besides the IP masq?). I`ve
got plenty time on my hands to play!!
After I`ve sorted out all these ftp, telnet, NFS problems, I`m gonna
try and setup ssh/ssh2.
Comments, please folks.
