Re: Amateur

Have we missed the obvious here? Harvey, are you booting the system up using
LILO, if so, it sounds as though you haven't told it you have made a new
kernel and so it is still using the old one.If this is the case, you need to
check the /etc/lilo.conf file and make sure it has an entry pointing to the
name of your new kernel (a copy of what is there now but with the name of
your new kernel in place of the old one and a new label for it) and then run
/sbin/lilo This should then list available kernels. At boot time, lilo will
load the first kernel it comes to unless you tell it differently, so, to
start with have your existing kernel 2.2.4 first in the lilo.conf script,
boot the machine but when it gets to the lilo boot: prompt, press the 'tab'
key which will show you the names of the available kernels and then enter
the name of your new one. The machine will now attempt to boot the new
kernel. If it works, all well and good but, if it hangs, simply reboot
without telling it to load the new kernel and you will be back in the old
one and able to modify things to try again (recompile the new kernel). Once
you are happy that it is stable, you can change the entries in lilo.conf
over to make your new kernel first in line and then do /sbin/lilo again to
set it in place. If you keep both kernels available, you will have a fall
back option at any time should you screw up the kernel you are using.
I'm not at my linux machine at the moment so I can't tell you exactly what
my lilo.conf says but, if you have any problems, get back to me and we'll
try to work it out.
