Re: Bizarre hosts.allow/.deny - my problem

Hi,

On a similar theme, can anyone explain what is happening on my system
please? I have linux and windows boxes networked and, until now, I hadn't
sussed out how to make it so the windows boxes could see and access the
files on the linux box. However, I have now done that and have full access
but, to do so I had to change the [HOME DIRECTORIES] bit of smb.conf to
include the lines 'browse = yes' and 'public = yes' and it is this last bit
which I'm puzzling about. I thought that I could limit access to the linux
directories by password and, if I leave the 'public = yes' line out, sure
enough, when I try to access the linux directory from windows, I am asked
for a password - BUT, I can't find out how to enter such a password or where
it should live. I tried all the possibilities of password I could think of
for my system - the login one, guest, pcguest, nobody, etc. but nothing even
got it a bit excited. So, what is happening here, am I doomed to have my
linux box fully exposed to anyone else on the network (like my son who loves
fiddling with things he doesn't understand) or not? Thanks,

Ian
