That's not good, both being weird suggests a hardware issue on the
motherboard. But keep you fingers crossed. (Did you ever use the
rescue disk before? Maybe the floppy's hosed.)
I assume your main system boots with LILO? Get to the boot: prompt (I
think you hit the Left Shift key while L I L O is printing) and type
linux single RET. This should prevent the system daemons from
getting loaded and dump you directly into a root shell (maybe
requiring a password, that varies by distro). Then you can figure out
what's in rc.local, or wherever.
