/dev/log disappeared...

Dear all,
I have a little problem with one of the boxes we've got lying
around here. Basically, it's to do with syslogd. When I installed linux
on it, it all ran smoothly, but after a bit of twiddling about /dev/log
went missing. I don't know what caused this, but the thing is it's not
there, so syslogd tends to output stuff on to the tty of interest. I
tried remaking the device, but it's not in the MAKEDEV list, and the
kernel only mentions it as a socket.This probably means that it is
connected to some other place (read file).

So, does anyone know how to re-create this baby?
