I use mutt in very much the same environment: all my mail is
sent out directly and received via POP3. My comments hence refer to
mutt, which after having used both, I think is a far better option.

That is something no one but the pine people can do much about
:)

Pine or mutt or mailx :) will actually read mail from a local
file (something like /var/mail/$USERNAME). How the mail gets there is
not pine/mutt's problem. Similarly, the mail you send out will be sent
out by sendmail/smail/qmail (called Mail Transport Agents, IIRC).

So far so good. If you want to retrieve mail from a POP3 server,
all you do is use fetchmail to download that and store it in your
/var/mail folder. Alternatively, you might want to use procmail to
filter out messages and the such (say, put the sheflug stuff in a given
folder, automatically reply to plonker [at] ...). But that's another subject
:)

As for the mail you send out, you will need to re-configure the
MTA or the MUA (Mail User Agent, which means pine/mutt/whatever) so that
it handles the fact that your e-mail address is something other than the
official one (such as jgomez [at] faust for mine). This is easily
accomplished in mutt. For an example, just examine the headers in this
message. You will see how it travelled from one computer to another, but
the e-mail is still *my* email.

At least, looks pretty much standard compliant :)

As I said, I'd rather use mutt than pine. At any rate, read the
Mail-User-HOWTO, in a directory near you :)

	Regards,
José (who stopped using pmail a couple of years ago, and has
since switched to a mutt/vim or emacs based approach :D)
