Err ... generally, bdflush is something linux likes to have around ;) I'm
not surprised you get complaints.... I wouldn't try to compile the kernel
on the 386 if I were you. Put the source on your desktop machine (being
careful not to place it over your current linux source tree ;), and
compile it there, making sure to target it to i386.

http://www.linuxrouter.org/ is a personal favourite of mine, but there are
a number of others, I forget their names unfortuantely. Have a look at the
distro's section of http://www.lwn.net/; they have practically every
distro under the sun. Try the obvious ones, like microlinux, ulinux, etc.,
I imagine there'll be something there that suits your needs!
