Where has all my HD space gone?

Hi,
	It puzzles me that I install 650Mb of software on a 750Mb drive, 
and I have zilch free space. Where has 100Mb  disappeared to, I 
can only presume it is to do with ext2 fs, but to lose 100Mb out of 
750Mb space I would consider rather inefficient. Any ideas?
