SDL problems

Last week I got SDL going, sort of, this weekend I upgraded to
SuSE 6.3 (Instead of 6.1) and installed the SDL off the CD's. I had
installed from scratch, saving my home directory on the dos
partition. The version of SDL was 0.9, so today I downloaded the
newly released stable 1.0.4 as an rpm. I installed it, and it worked
as kpackage knows its there. I ran the program "fire" compiled last
week, which needs SDL, and it worked. Yet when I try to
"./configure" it tells me SDL 1.0.1 is not found, and I am doing it
as root. Do I assume that the configure script is stupid and cannot
see that there is a newer version on my system, and the problem
is there? Or, is there some configuration I do not know about which
needs to be done?

I have downloaded the source to many SDL reliant programs and
have the same problem with each.

Thanks in advance.
