That's what we have Linux for.  Samba is far more efficient than a Winbox,
and as for FTP/telnet and what have you, well, there's just not competition,
really... <g>

That's not a bad swap.  Not bad at all.

You did well.  I can't get it on in under 12 or so, usually.  Then again,
some of the hardware combos I end up with are rather... shall we say,
special?

I'm planning on putting up some notes this weekend on the subject, as the
basis for my talk.  You're welcome to take a copy if you want.  I'll be
posting the URL here when they're up.

You'd see a bit of a speedup in lookups for frequently used sites, but the
caching in most resolver implementations isn't bad, usually.  I personally
wouldn't bother setting up a caching name server, it's not really worth the
hassle.  The benefit comes when you have a few machines, and maintaining
hosts files is getting to be a mondo pain in the arse.  Add those benefits
to the bit you might get from a caching nameserver, and you start to get
into the benefits region of the graph...
