Why does everyone insist on running the latest, greatest kernel, unless
they've got a need for the latest, greatest hardware support.

Downgrade a bit to 2.0.3[5678...] to free up a bit of space.

ncurses (if you want make menuconfig), as86, binutils, uhm... I think that
shoud be about it.  Oh, gzip, modutils if you want to support kernel
modules...

The best thing to do is to run a make config; make dep; make clean; make
zImage and watch the errors...
