Seagate
Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!
I have just spent the last hour installing my modem on my WinNT box and
sorting out NT so it doesn't look down the ethernet cable for it's default
route/DNS etc. Why? 'Cos I just lost the root disk on my Linux box so it's a
bit dead at the mo. It woke me up at 4:30AM with BIOS type beeping noises
and when I try to boot it just gives me a sad little 'LIL-' as lilo fails to
boot. The disk was a Seagate Medalist ST31720A (1.7 gig) - the third to pass
through my hands and the third to die on me. The first was in my old P133 -
it died and was replaced by another under warranty. I aquired another
ST31720A 2nd hand so I could play with RAID/disk mirroring - except it died
within a few weeks. Now the replacement drive has died too. I now have a
matching pair of Seagate paper weights/door stops. I have never had any
problems with any other harddisks except these damn Seagates, and I promise
you I never played football with them, used them as drinks mats or generally
abused them in any way. Has anybody else had any problems like this? Do you
think I have grounds for a nasty email to Seagate seeing as the drives are
both over 18 months old and have a dubious history? Why does my old Conner
200 meg drive still work flawlessly after 7 years of being chucked around,
plugged in upside down, etc?
Sorry about the rant but I'm a bit upset at the moment.
