D'oh!

I usually put my own link in a la  'ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/startx 
/usr/X11R6/bin/x' I could've sworn that the SuSE installation asked me if I 
wanted it to automagically create the link for me, to which I answered 
'yes'. I don't know what it was asking me in that case then :(

Anyway, it all works now, ta very much, and I don't mind a certain level of 
embarrassment if I learn something and it gets the job done.
