Actually, there's no danger compiling stuff as root as opposed to some
other user. Running the stuff you've compiled, maybe, but the point about
not doing stuff as root is so that you don't hose the whole machine when
you goof - there's no reason to be particularly scared of doing stuff as
root, as long as you know what you're doing. I generally compile my kernel
as root because it saves hassle when I come to 'lilo' and stuff - set user
is three keypresses too many ;)
