I'm just trying to think of the documents I worked with to begin with... I
know if you install teTeX (the preferred distro of the system for Linux and
Unix boxes) you'll find the docs I used to get going in
/usr/<share>/doc/texmf/latex/general/, I think.  I'll try and hunt down
better info for you later, I'm not at a useful box at the moment (DOS box at
Uni... <ugh>)

I placed <share> in the angle brackets because it may or may not be there
depending on how FHS-happy your version of teTeX is...
