Thanks to those who responded to my request for help - the solution is at
http://microelec.uab.es/~marin. Anyone else who thinks they have a PC
Chips 520 mobo should check this page - mine turns out to be an Amptron
PM7900, for which there is a bios upgrade enabling CDROM boot.

I'm now a happy bunny :)
