[Sheflug - Sheffield Linux User's Group] LILO passwords

Hi all,

just thought I'd share an idea. If, like me, you can't have your Linux box
running 24 hours a day, it can be a pain if you accidently leave a floppy
in the drive and get a message. So much for turn on and wait ;-)

My idea is this... in BIOS, change the boot order to C,A or
CDROM,C,A. This way, the hard disk will be the primary boot device
(assuming you haven't left a CD in the drive) and the floppy only kicks in
if LILO is trashed.

Add an option in lilo.conf as follows:

	other = /dev/fd0
	  label = floppy
	  password = **** <- OPTIONAL

Ensuring a floppy is in the drive (any floppy), run LILO. This way, you
can leave disks in while rebooting, and floppy boot will only occur if you
type floppy. If you use a password, it means you can boot from a floppy,
but everyone else will have the HDD (or CD) or both. (don't forget the
BIOS password. Pointless otherwise!)

Just a thought, anyhow. I find it useful.
