To be honest, there are usually two classes of web page: those that work
with anything, and those that only work for one specific end-user target.
I generally find, though, that it is possible to create pages that
accommodate all users. I am slightly worried by the fact that people are
having trouble browsing the site in Lynx, et al. The lack of alt=
provision is a Bad Thing because it doesn't just impact text users; it
impacts those with disabilities also (the blind, for example, usually rely
on alt= tags being read out to them, so that they may navigate the links).
If you like Richard, I can do some research into whether or not it is
possible to generate a scaling front page?
Scaling front pages do work, see http://www.xmpdvd.co.uk/ (not just a
blatent plug - I was involved in creating it!). The side-effects can be
that different columns scale to different heights (a side-effect of
word-wrapping), which can create white-space at the bottom of the page.
And of course, it won't scale to all resolutions - lower than 640x480 is
starting to get silly - but it also handles the higher resolutions with
ease.

I'm afraid I count myself as a professional - i.e., I get paid for my web
work :-). Not much though, I'm a student....
Cheers,
Alex.
