[Sheflug] (In)SANE

Well, after bottoming the faulty H/W problem I'm now trying to get a SCSI
scanner up and running. It's a KYE ColorPage-HR5 which the SANE website
tells me is supported by the UMAX Backend.
If I do "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" I get

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 04 LUN: 00
Vendor: KYE	Model: ColorPage-HR5	Rev: V2.4
Type: Scanner ANSI SCSI revision: 02

If I type "scanimage -L" I get

Detected scsi generic sga at scsi0, channel 0, id 4, lun 0
device `pnm:0' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device
device `pnm:1' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device

the first time I run it, but subsequent times only report the virtual devices.

My /etc/sane.d/dll.conf has the lines

pnm
umax

My /etc/sane.d/umax.conf has the lines

scsi KYE ColorScan-HR5 Scanner 0 00 04 00
/dev/scanner

/dev/scanner is a symlink to /dev/sga, both of which are chmod 777

if I type "scanimage > test.pnm" I get the error

scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

I can get the pnm:0 and pnm:1 devices to work OK but am struggling with the
"real" scanner.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?

All help much appreciated.

Steve
