Hmm...

assert(0);  /* Can't happen */

The only thing I can think of is that somehow root hasn't been assigned UID
0.  Did you, say, run 'adduser root' at some stage, or edit the /etc/passwd
or /etc/shadow file?  Apart from that, you've got a mighty nice
impossibility.

If you're in Sheffield, bring your machine to the demo days we've got going
at the moment, and I'll fix it for you.
