It should be straightforward. First of all, forget about X, as
this can be sorted out later. So boot up, and log into a console. Move
the mouse around, and observe /proc/interrupts. Give the mouse a roll
over the table, and observer /proc/interrupts again. This looks like
this here (only relevant stuff considered)
CPU0
12: 5571 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
<Shaking mouse around a bit...>
12: 6003 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
As you can see, the number of interrupts requested by the PS2
mouse has increased. If you have a serial mouse, chances are that a
serial port entry will be requesting the interrupts.
If this works fine, then the hardware/kernel bit is fine (and I
don't see why it shouldn't, unless you have an unusual mouse), or if the
BIOS has disconnected the ps2/serial port in question.
Now, install (if it isn't) gpm (be root, and do a simple dpkg -i
<path>gpm*deb). As it installs it, the installer will try to configure
it (I think...). If not, there's a file lurking somewhere called
"gpmconfig" that tries to guess what mouse you have. It also creates a
nice config file for gpm. This should detect your mouse, guess what
mouse it is and sort the file out for you (possibly /etc/gpm.conf).
With this, you know everything about the mouse. Amend the
relevant XF86Config bits and off you go!!!
You can also skip installing gpm, and using XF86Setup to try
different mouse settings if the interrupt mechanism is happy.
That should put you up to speed in no time at all :)

José
