[Sheflug] Starting modules at boot up

I can load a SCSI module OK on my SuSE6.3 box by inserting the appropriate 
lines into /etc/modules.conf. However, if I want to use the card in my 
Mandrake 7 box and enter the same lines into /etc/conf.modules, the module 
isn't loaded, instead I have to manually load it using modprobe.

I must have overlooked something or otherwise be doing something wrong. Can 
someone put me straight please?
