Since you are running Mandrake (which has atalk compiled in by default
- this means that Linux will store Mac files in a "split" format
with the resource fork of files under and .AppleDouble directory in each
directory), may I suggest you get hold of the
netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-6.src.rpm (try Google search or look for it at
a mirror of contrib.redhat.com/libc6/SRPMS - failing that, I can send
it to you or make it downloadable for you from an appropriate site)
do "rpm --rebuild netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-6.src.rpm" and then install
the RPM generated with
"rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/ix86/netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-6.ix86.rpm"

Replace x86 with the appropriate processor of your system.

Edit the /etc/atalk/* file if you want.

Once the atalk daemon (the thingy that listens on the Ethernet port for
Appletalk Traffic and passes it on to the kernel to read/write the file
system) is running (you can start it manually with
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk start") your system should be visible on the
Mac Browser.

Connecting as a user with the Linux username and pasword will export the
user directory for use by the Mac.

What I usually do is create a new folder (/home/user/AppleTalk) and use
that as the user mac export directory (set is as "~/AppleTalk" instead
of "~" in the /etc/atalk/AppleVolumes.default file.
