No apology necessary, that was helpful actually. It's me who needs to offer
my apologies for being such a thickie.
Right, I've run 'make' and 'make install but got what appear to be some
path errors. The makefile has 3 path variables, I've left the installation
and /man paths as default and set DISTDIR to ../netatalk-1.3.3 rather that
the default of ../netatalk-dist, the actual absolute path is
/tmp/netatalk-1.3.3. 'make' seems to be failing to find some file in
sub-directories of /tmp/netatalk-1.3.3

Any ideas? I can append the relevant files if necessary.

Steve
