[Sheflug] Modem problems

I have a modular technology external V.90 k56 flex modem, which is showing
some very strange behaviour.

I cannot get the speaker (external) to stay on during dialling, some time it
is on during the handshaking but not all the time, I have tried all the
various X,M,L flags but no luck. The modem will not return a busy tone as
well, so I have to wait for the time out to occur. Has anyone else had this
problem.

With certain ISP's the routing drops, this never happens with the 33.6K USR
modem. The line is still open but a route command hangs whilst trying to get
past the connection at the other end of the modem.The routing is normally OK
for the first ten mins or so of a connection. Any ideas?

I have tried flashing the modem with the latest V.90 s/w in case it is a
protocol problem, but the flash s/w cannot identify the modem and the
programming fails.

Any help would be appreciated (but not along the lines of buy a new modem)
