[Sheflug] Awful world of JPEG

Evening boys n' girls,

"What have you been up to?", I hear you all ask. Well, let me tell you
all my adventures starting with yesterday evening...

I found a libjpeg.rpm at Caldera's site, but that crashed X, so I
thought "there MUST be a RPM at SuSE". Sure enough, a couple of hours
later I'd found: libjpeg-6.2.0-62.i386.rpm. Perfect I thought. One
command later and I found that Netscape 6 ran, yes really, but crashed
everytime I touched anything. "Ooh, that's funny, Kmail doesn't work, and
Electric Eyes doesn't display any .jpg images, and The Gimp has gone a
bit funny..." etc etc. I logged out and back in to X, and nothing, again
I logged out, but this time as my girlfriend (she prefers KDE you
see) and, of course X again freaked out. I've removed the new RPM and
put the old one back in and am now sobbing violently at my desk...

A thought: I remember from the meeting a couple of months ago(?), that
nice man from SuSE handing out trial versions of SuSE 6.4. Has anyone
still got one, and could they do me a copy? Of course, I'll pay expenses
etc etc: I've just remembered the Update System option when you boot with
it. Surely nothing can go wrong that way. Can it?

Thanks to everyone who took the time & energy to respond to this
thread. Is there anything more I can do, or is this a big full stop?

Thanks again

Harvey
