It's usually not too bad; just a case of './configure', '[su -c] make
install', and that's it.

Heh ;) I usually find that people hate compiling from source, and for the
first few attempts absolutely nothing works. Then, suddenly, something
clicks and it's all fabulous. At least, that's the way it was for me. You
don't particularly have to know how to program - I don't personally go
around fixing people's programs for them. About the most I've ever done
was put a '\' in front of some quote marks that someone left out in a
printf() statement, I don't usually fix real bugs unless I really want the
software. That said, it's been ages since I've downloaded something that
didn't compile properly first time.
